about

Augenblick is a German word, translated as a moment, a split second, or (literally) the blink of an eye.

It's a half hour long piece, made up of three sections. In the whole piece, these are roughly divided:

(pt.1) The Moment We’re Born - 0:00
(pt.2) The Life Between - 7:47
(pt.3) The Moment We Die - 19:00

I've been thinking a lot about mortality of late and trying to come to terms with some personal issues and tribulations, which played into this work.

One of the other inspirations behind it was from Eno's original definition of ambient music, and previous to that, Erik Satie's notion of 'furniture music'. The piece as a whole is supposed to work on two levels. It stands up to very conscious, mindful headphone listening and contemplation (thematically-speaking, the titles are pretty self-explanatory).

It is also serves to act as furniture music; specifically in my case, I wanted to make a piece of music that I could put on during a family dinner on the balcony, which could be played at a moderate volume, but yet not intrude in the slightest - to the extent that, in this context, you barely know it has been playing until it's been turned off/reaches its end, but it enhances your experience and aims to simultaneously evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing.

In the second context, it works better outside, as there are a large number of washes/whooshes that should interact with the natural sound of the outside world. Some of the low frequency parts of it get a little lost, but this is counteracted by the busy, slightly frantic-at-times high frequency content. Plus, too much bass would make it too noticeable.

The piece is presented first as a whole (as intended for consumption), and then subsequently each part is available separately for download. Enjoy.
